Chris Yon & Taryn Griggs Website

YOGGS FAMILY NEWSLETTER, 2014-present, is an immersive experience where the audience is led through the lobby of the Nasher Museum of Art by Chris Yon and Taryn Griggs alongside their daughter, Bea Yon. The audience is integrated into the trio as momentary chorus members to our family stories, dances, and drawing games. “Dance, for our family, is a parenthesis for life experience. Periods of our lives that we spent working on choreography coincide with periods of major things happening in our lives and the world.” While the dances look “abstract” or non-narrative, this collection addresses how the trio captures experiences, creates memories, and attaches significance to when and where we dance together and who we meet along the way as part of our family story.

“Yon and Griggs are deadpan comics of rhythmized eccentric gesture — loops of simple steps with rock, paper, scissors on top. Part of the comedy lies in the contrast between his melancholy schlumpiness and her manic Broadway flair. With Bea, clearly the child of that combination, they became something like a family in a Wes Anderson film. As they straight-faced through sketches about customer service holds, cut-up poems and layers of cat T-shirts, the incorporation of the preteen increased the domestic charm.”

Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 pm

Parking is available for free in the Nasher Lot as well as the Campus Drive Lot, located near the intersection of Campus Dr and Anderson St.

Londs Reuter Website

GOOD EFFORT by dancer and choreographer Londs Reuter is an evening-length performance of attunement, calibration, repetition, trying, and trying again. Choreographed in collaboration with local professional dancers Kaitlin Fox, Kristin Clotfelter, and Anna Maynard, on-site at the North Carolina Museum of Art, GOOD EFFORT asks its performers to be in relationship to effort and sense into what they need to stay together, to lift their leg, or to make it up a hill. For Reuter, effort—whether high, low, or somewhere in between—is a compositional tool and design technique, empowering each performer to exercise their authorship, agency, and invention. What does it take to meet the moment? When does it feel good to give more? When does it feel right to keep 10% for yourself? GOOD EFFORT asserts that no one else might know the effort required for you to do something—but you always do.

The performance will take place outdoors at NCMA in the field adjacent to the Volunteer Garden. Seating is on the lawn. Please bring your chair or blanket if preferred. Limited chairs will be available.
Audio description available here.

Visitor parking is free and available in the Blue Ridge lot, on the right after entering the Museum Drive. Overflow parking is behind West Building, on the left after entering Museum Drive. There will be a short walk (5-10 minutes) from parking to the performance location behind the amphitheater.

ADF is pleased to host free informal showings of dance pieces in-progress in our Scripps Studio. Masks and proof of vaccination are required for entry. Space is limited and registration is required.

Stuck In Free Fall is a show about Nothing. In this solo performance, which utilizes movement, song, a microphone, and a projection of her artists book by the same name, Nicola guides audience members through a collective reading-and-doing. Featuring poetry, narrative, and love letters to the void, Stuck In Free Fall attempts the impossible task of conjuring, accessing, and experiencing Nothingness together using the only tools we have: our bodies, our voices, and the power of our collective imagination.

Nicola Bullock is a Berlin-based choreographer, dancer, and writer. Her work has been seen at venues and festivals in Canada, Georgia, Germany, Israel, Tunisia, and the US. Most recently Nicola has had the pleasure of collaborating with Pig Iron Theatre Company (The Path of Pins or the Path of Needles) and choreographer Min Yoon | Citizen Truth (Dancing With Violence) on performance projects. She is currently pursuing her MFA in dance at the University of the Arts.
