Program: Battleground

ADF-Commissioned World Premiere | ADF Debut
Tickets: $35

Black Label Movement Website

In its genre-defying Battleground, Black Label Movement literally plows through 10 inches of tilled soil to examine the concept, energies, and consequences of the incessant armed conflicts that the United States has fought since World War II – America’s Forever War.

Inspired by President Eisenhower’s prophetic warning against the Military Industrial Complex, Black Label Artistic Director Carl Flink utilizes scientific research and the company’s exhilarating physical-impact technique to place a magnifying glass on the ethical and physical implications of glorifying military power and violence.

Inviting intentional examination of perpetual violence and aggression and its pervasive role in present-day American society, Battleground demands audience members reflect upon its consequences while seeking empathy for the humans who must prosecute and survive it.

Premiering in October 2024 at a specially designed location built on a farm on the outskirts of Durham, North Carolina, Battleground has been commissioned by the American Dance Festival and supported by a 2022 MAP Fund grant, with additional funding from the University of Minnesota’s Imagine Fund and Grant-in-Aid programs.

Performance area is approximately 150 steps, along a dirt path, from the parking/shuttle drop-off area.

Seating will not be provided. Audience members should bring a chair to sit in so they are off the ground, which could be damp. Blankets not recommended. Closed-toe shoes and socks suggested.

Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Porta-potties will be available on-site.

The weather is forecast to be sunny. If the weather conditions change, the performance will still occur if there is light mist/rain; please plan appropriately. Intermittent rain could lead to a delay in start time. Steady rain or more severe weather will cause the performance to be postponed or canceled. In the event of cancellation, refunds will not be issued. We thank you for investing in live experiences that may be impacted by Mother Nature.

ADF-Commissioned World Premiere
Running Time: 60 minutes, no intermission
Tickets: $27

ShaLeigh Dance Works Website

enVISION: The Next Chapter is an immersive interdisciplinary performance that relies not on sight or sound but on the felt sense of sonic experiences and visual perceptions. In a collective creative process, the work has brought together a team of collaborators around two questions: Can we listen to what we see? Can we see what we hear? Conceived explicitly with and for individuals who are low-vision and blind, as well as low-hearing and deaf, the work proposes a new multisensory experience of dance and theater. The work will be presented to a live audience who can choose to experience the show blindfolded or with earbuds, and five audience members will be invited to join the experience onstage. This ADF commission builds on enVISION: Sensory Beyond Sight, which premiered at ADF in 2022.

“This imaginative and immersive performance literally presents the audience with a new sensorial way to experience dance and theater.”
– Kim Jackson, Beltline to Broadway
